Other than the weather, the day hasn't been too terribly bad. I got an e-mail from Ben this morning, and then I got a phone call from him early this afternoon. As much as I know the kids love talking to him, it was great being able to sit and chat without Gabriel yelling in my ear.
In talking to him, I got to find out a little more about what things are like for him over there. He said living conditions aren't too bad. He lives in a 12-man tent, though it's a little more civilized than what the word 'tent' usually evokes...the tents have wood floors and heat/air conditioning. Right now they have no internet or phone service, so they can only contact home through the DSN phones and their work e-mail addresses. The rumor is that they're supposed to have internet and phone within a month or so, but he said he'll believe it when he sees it. They're also supposed to be getting a PX within a month or so; I believe he said at the moment they have to go to a different base if they need to buy anything. As far as work, he's been doing a lot of it. He's been working a lot of 18-19 hour days. I know they don't have much to do besides work and sleep, but I really hope things start slowing down for them before too much longer.
Not much happened here on the homefront today. I took Ben's package out to the post office and mailed it, which means I actually left the house two days in a row (other than to walk Gabe to the bus stop). That's a big feat for me, since I don't leave the house much even when Ben IS home. I'm hoping to start getting into some volunteering and things to help me pass the time. The unit has a couple events scheduled this month, so that's a start.
And with that, I'm going to sign off for the day. On to day 14 (almost two weeks!!)...
